Full read-write Claude connector for Slack

Let Claude post updates and reply in the right thread in Slack

Stop copy-pasting summaries and follow-ups out of Claude and into Slack. Claude reads the channel, drafts the message in place, replies inside the original thread, reacts and updates, and sends only once you approve.

Slack is the messaging platform where teams run channels, threads, and direct messages. People want Claude to do more than read a channel: to post updates, reply in the right thread, and keep conversations moving without leaving the tools they already work in.

What is a Slack MCP server?

A Slack MCP server is a small hosted service that exposes Slack's data and actions to Claude over the Model Context Protocol, so Claude can draft, send, and triage messages inside your own account. We build it as a custom connector with separate read and write tools, and destructive actions stay gated behind your approval.

What can Slack's current connector do today?

Today, Slack's directory Claude connector leans toward reading and search, and the write side it exposes is often a thin slice. Posting into the right channel, replying in-thread, reacting, and updating messages are limited or absent. A custom Slack connector adds those write actions with scoped, human-in-the-loop controls.

What does full read-write Slack access unlock?

Full read-write Slack access lets Claude post a message to a channel, reply inside the original thread, add reactions, set a status, and update or pin messages once you approve. The summarizing and follow-up that used to mean copy-paste happen where the conversation already lives.

  • Post a message to a specific channel
  • Reply inside an existing thread, keeping the conversation in context
  • Send a direct message to a person or group
  • Add an emoji reaction to a message
  • Update or pin a message after you approve it
  • Search a channel's history and propose a drafted summary to post

Can Claude post a message to a Slack channel?

Yes. With a full read-write Slack connector, Claude can publish a message to the channel you choose and reply inside an existing thread, keeping the conversation in context. Posting is a scoped write tool, separate from reading, so the message goes out only after you approve it.

Can Claude reply in a thread and react to messages in Slack?

Claude can reply inside an existing thread so the conversation stays in context, add an emoji reaction, and update or pin a message after you approve it. These write actions are scoped tools, kept separate from reading, so you stay in control of what runs.

Will Claude send a Slack message without my approval?

No. Posting a message or sending a direct message is a gated write action. Claude can prepare the message and show it to you, but it is sent only after you confirm. The connector authenticates as your account, so it never reaches channels you cannot already see.

How a Slack connector works

We build a small MCP server that authenticates to Slack with OAuth and the narrowest scopes the work needs. Read tools (search, read channel and thread) and write tools (post, reply, react, update) are separated, and outbound or destructive actions like sending a message require your confirmation. Claude only ever has the access your own Slack account already has.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude post messages to a Slack channel, not just read them?
Yes. A custom Slack connector exposes a post-to-channel write tool, so Claude can publish a message to the channel you choose and reply inside an existing thread. The directory connection is read-leaning, which is why posting and in-thread replies need a purpose-built connector with scoped write tools.
Will Claude send a Slack message without my approval?
No. Posting a message or sending a direct message is a separate, gated write action. Claude can prepare the message and show it to you, but it is only sent after you approve it. You decide which actions run automatically and which require a confirmation step first.
Does the Slack connector get more access than I have?
No. The connector authenticates as your account through OAuth and inherits your existing permissions. It can only see the channels, threads, and direct messages you can already see, and it never grants Claude more access to your workspace than you already have yourself.
