Full read-write Claude connector for Metabase
Let Claude create questions and build dashboards in Metabase
Stop clicking through the query builder and dragging cards by hand. Claude creates saved questions, assembles dashboards, and organizes collections inside your Metabase instance, where your data already lives, and leaves archiving and subscriptions for you to approve.
Metabase is an open-source business intelligence tool that lets teams ask questions of their databases and build dashboards without writing SQL. People want Claude to do more than read charts: to create questions, organize collections, and update dashboards directly in their Metabase instance.
What is a Metabase MCP server?
A Metabase MCP server is a small hosted service that exposes Metabase's data and actions to Claude over the Model Context Protocol, so Claude can records, tables, and queries inside your own account. We build it as a custom connector with separate read and write tools, and destructive actions stay gated behind your approval.
What can Metabase's current connector do today?
Metabase ships an official Claude connector, but it exposes a fixed, standard set of tools that covers a generic slice of the product. A custom Metabase connector delivers the full capability your team needs: the specific actions, collection scoping, workflow steps, and human-in-the-loop controls that the native tool set leaves out, all shaped to how your instance actually works.
What does full read-write Metabase access unlock?
Full read-write Metabase access lets Claude create or update a saved question, build and arrange a dashboard, manage collections and permissions, and refresh queries against your warehouse. The dashboard assembly and metric definitions that used to mean manual clicking happen inside the instance where your data already lives.
- Create a saved question from a natural-language prompt and a chosen data source
- Build or update a dashboard and arrange its cards and filters
- Organize questions and dashboards into collections
- Edit an existing question's query, visualization, or display settings
- Set up an alert or schedule a subscription after you approve it
- Archive stale questions and dashboards as you clean up a collection
Can Claude create a saved question in Metabase?
Yes. A custom Metabase connector exposes a create-question write tool, so Claude builds the query from your prompt, picks the visualization, and saves it into the collection you choose. It works against the instance and collections your Metabase account already has access to, nothing beyond that.
Can Claude build and update a dashboard in Metabase?
Building and updating a dashboard in Metabase is a supported write action. Claude can assemble a dashboard, arrange its cards and filters, and edit an existing question's query or display settings. The create and update flow runs freely; archiving stale questions stays a separate, gated step.
Will Claude archive questions or send subscriptions without my approval?
No. Archiving questions and dashboards, sending a subscription, and scheduling an alert are gated actions that run only after you confirm them. Claude prepares the change and shows you what it will do, so destructive or outbound steps always wait for a human while organizing flows in the background.
How a Metabase connector works
We build a small MCP server that authenticates to Metabase with an API key or a scoped session, and connects only to the instance and collections the work needs. Read tools (list questions, run query, fetch dashboard) and write tools (create question, edit dashboard, manage collection) are separated, and destructive or outbound actions like archiving or sending a subscription require your confirmation. Claude never has more access than the Metabase account it runs as, and where your instance is self-hosted behind a firewall we can restrict the server to an allowlisted IP.
