Full read-write Claude connector for Clio

Make Claude open matters and log billable time in Clio

Stop tabbing into Clio to handle intake and admin. Claude opens the matter, attaches the contact, creates and assigns tasks, and logs time against the right matter, all from inside the work you are already doing, with anything that touches billing held for your approval.

Clio is a practice-management platform for law firms, covering matters, contacts, calendars, tasks, documents, time entries, and billing. Legal teams want Claude to act on that data, not just read it: opening matters, logging time, and creating tasks where the work already lives.

What is a Clio MCP server?

A Clio MCP server is a small hosted service that exposes Clio's data and actions to Claude over the Model Context Protocol, so Claude can industry-specific platforms inside your own account. We build it as a custom connector with separate read and write tools, and destructive actions stay gated behind your approval.

What can Clio's current connector do today?

Clio exposes a REST API and OAuth, but there is no first-party Claude or MCP connector, so any Claude access today is custom-built. A scoped connector can let Claude read matters, contacts, and tasks and add write actions like creating tasks, logging time, and drafting notes, with approval gates on anything that touches billing.

What does full read-write Clio access unlock?

Full read-write Clio access lets Claude open a matter, add a contact, create and assign tasks, log billable time against the right matter, and update activity notes after you approve. The intake and admin steps that usually mean tabbing through Clio happen inside the matter you are already working on.

  • Open a new matter and attach the relevant contact
  • Create and assign tasks with due dates against a matter
  • Log a billable time entry to the correct matter and activity
  • Add or update a contact record
  • Draft an activity note or matter update for your review
  • Create a calendar entry tied to a matter

Can Claude open a matter and add a contact in Clio?

Yes. With a custom read-write connector, Claude can open a new matter and attach the relevant contact, then create and assign tasks with due dates against it. Clio has a REST API but no first-party Claude integration, so these write actions are purpose-built and scoped to your own login.

Can Claude log billable time in Clio?

Claude can log a billable time entry against the correct matter and activity, and draft activity notes or matter updates for your review. Time entries and notes flow as routine write tools, while anything that affects an invoice is separated out and applied only after you confirm it.

Will Claude get more access to client data than I have?

No. The connector authenticates as your Clio account through OAuth and inherits your existing permissions and matter visibility. It never grants Claude more access than you already have, and narrow scopes plus optional IP allowlisting keep the surface as small as your firm requires.

How a Clio connector works

We build a small MCP server that authenticates to Clio with OAuth 2.0 and the narrowest scopes the work needs. Read tools (matters, contacts, tasks) and write tools (create task, log time, update note) are separated, and anything that touches billing or sends data out requires your confirmation. The connector only ever has the access your own Clio login already has, and can be restricted to specific IP ranges if your firm requires it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude create matters and log time in Clio, not just read it?
Yes, through a custom connector. Clio has a REST API but no first-party Claude integration, so the write actions are purpose-built. The connector can expose tools to open a matter, create tasks, and log a time entry against the right matter and activity, with the steps you want gated behind approval.
Will Claude change billing or invoices without my approval?
No. Billing-related write actions are separated from read and routine write tools and are gated behind a confirmation step. Claude can prepare a time entry or note, but anything affecting an invoice is only applied after you approve it, so financial records stay under your control.
Does the connector get more access to client data than I have?
No. The connector authenticates as your Clio account through OAuth and inherits your existing permissions and matter visibility. It never grants Claude more access than you already have, and scopes plus optional IP allowlisting keep the surface as small as your firm needs.
